Rocky Mountain Soap
South Centre
Calgary, Alberta, Canada

The Rocky Mountain Soap Company is a natural bath and body product retailer that started out in Canmore, Alberta. As the majestic beauty of the nature that surrounds them continues to inspire their vision, the company has grown to include stores across western and central Canada.

Rocky Mountain SoapFor a company so passionate about sharing the therapeutic powers of natural ingredients while minimizing their impact on the environment, the lighting design of their stores had to utilize energy efficient techniques and practices while creating an environment that speaks to their customer.

Recessed adjustable downlights were located in the centre area of the space to highlight the product displayed on the nesting tables. The luminaires for general and accent lighting within the space are a mix of new and reused products salvaged from previous renovations.

Patterns of high and low contrast draw the customer into and through the store towards the focal wall of handmaid-soaps deep within. Linear wall washing luminaires illuminate the company logo on the back wall of the shop while ceramic metal halide (CMH) and HIR MR16 luminaires shine on the handmade-soaps, highlighting the natural colors and textures of each unique formula.

Combining halogen infrared and ceramic metal halide lamp technologies, allowed for the use of fewer light fixtures to illuminate the perimeter displays. Both technologies possess high quality light for rendering the natural tones of the company’s products and branding.

To increase the efficiency and decrease the maintenance requirements of the lighting, long life CMH and long life HIR MR16 lamps were specified. Now, instead of worrying about replacing lamps, the owners and staff of the Rocky Mountain Soap Company and can focus on their passion for enjoying nature and promoting healthy, environmentally conscious bath and body care products.

LDI has created lighting designs for other Rocky Mountain Soap Co. Stores in Alberta and BC.
