Paul D. Mercier MS, LC, IALD, Principal

Paul Mercier is the Design Principal of Lighting Design Innovations.  A professional member of the International Association of Lighting Designers and a professional lighting designer certified by the National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Professions, Paul has over 30 years’ experience in lighting design completing projects across North America.  Paul has a Masters Degree in Lighting from Queensland University of Technology (Australia).Paul

A past-president of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s (IES) Chinook (Calgary) Section, past Regional Vice President for the Northwest Region, and past Director on the Society’s Board, he was responsible for membership and strategic planning for governance and membership growth.  Paul is the Past President of the Illuminating Engineering Society and served the organization as Acting Executive Vice President in 2014/2015.

Mr. Mercier is a judge for lighting design awards including the International Illumination Design Award for IES and General Electric’s International Edison Awards.  He has received numerous awards for interior, exterior, and energy-efficient lighting designs.

Paul is the author of both lighting design and software applications articles and has been published in Canada, England, Australia, Asia, and the United States.  His most recent written work – a collaboration with his partner, Kim, is a book entitled “Architecture for Light” and is available at www.ies.org.

He is an adjunct instructor of undergraduate lighting design at SUNY College at Buffalo and a seasonal instructor for a post-graduate architectural lighting design course at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design.  Paul instructs on several AIA approved course topics including: Lighting Emerging Technologies, LED Technologies and Applications, LED Architectural Applications and Heritage Landscape Lighting.

Paul is renovating his circa 1920’s Sears Kit Home in his spare time, and recently made dozens of phone calls over three months while trying to locate the original split face block mold for the home’s foundation repair.  He found the mold.
